6/19/10 Wheatly's current voice is a place holder?
LOS ANGELES — Fans of Portal fell in love with the ill-fated and utterly silent Companion Cube. In Portal 2, they’ll make a friend who is a little more chatty. Valve presented scenes from Portal 2, the sequel due in 2011, at the E3 Expo here Wednesday. And among those clips were moments when players hook up with Wheatley — a loose personality core knocking around GLaDOS‘ wrecked testing labs. Wheatley’s introduction bears all the trademark pitch-black humor found in the physics-defying original Portal. For his entire existence, the A.I. has been attached to a series of tracks hanging from the laboratory ceiling. He’s been told that he’d die instantly if he ever detached from his rail, but he’s willing to risk instant death to become your new best bud. Once Wheatley stares down death, players can carry him around, attaching him to certain computers to open new paths. The instantly likeable Wheatley also provides a portable source of levity. Sadly, Doug Lombardi from Valve told Wired.com that the Wheatley voice in the E3 demo is placeholder audio provided by Valve animator Richard Lord. Lord’s performance may or may not appear in the final game. Read More Wired
